About the festival

The Gwanak Gang Gamchan Festival is held in Gwanak, a city rich in history, to honor the patriotic spirit and achievements of General Gang Gam-chan, the hero of the Battle of Gwiju, and is a representative historical and cultural festival of Seoul. It is a representative festival of Gwanak made and enjoyed together by Gwanak-gu residents. The Gang Gam-chan Festival was newly launched in 2016 by merging the Gwanaksan Royal Azalea Festival, Gwanak-gu's representative traditional cultural festival running since 1998, with the Nakseongdae Inheonje memorial rite, which has continued since 1988. Against the backdrop of cultural heritage associated with the general, including Nakseongdae, where he is said to have been born at the spot where Mungokseong, the fourth star of the Big Dipper, fell, Inheon-dong, named after his posthumous title, and Seowon-dong, home to a pavilion he often visited on his trips to and from Songdo, the festival carries on his spirit with a variety of programs in today's form. "Tomorrow Gang Gam-chan" begins in the third week of October. Marking its 10th anniversary in 2026, the festival expands its content as a Goryeo historical and cultural festival of Seoul embracing K-culture, taking a new step as a sustainable, win-win festival that connects generations and revitalizes the community.
