Samnangseong Fortress History and Culture Festival

About the festival

Legend says Samnangseong Fortress, which surrounds Jeondeungsa Temple, was built by the three sons of Dangun to repel invaders. During the Goryeo Dynasty, after the court moved to Ganghwado to escape the Mongols, a 120-day Buddhist ceremony for victory was held at the temporary palace here. The fortress also kept the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty for 250 years, was the site of victory over French forces in 1866 and saw a week of righteous army battles against Japan in the late Joseon era. Held every year from the first Saturday of October to share this proud history, the festival marks its 26th edition.
